[comp.sys.mac.system] Sick SE/30

jlc@atux01.UUCP (Jim Collymore) (12/07/90)

Yesterday I spoke with the tech support people at APS (where I bought my hard
drive in March). They suggested increasing my system heap size. Fortunately,
I have a copy of "HeapFixer" (HF) and I could do this. The documentation in
HF warns that if you have a lot of INITs (I have 13) you may begin to
have a lot of mysterious system crashes. In my case, this was VERY true. I
couldn't even run DiskFirst Aid 1.4.3! It would ALWAYS crash. Not now, though.

I follwed the instructions in HeapFixer which were, in short:

1) Go to the "About Finder" Dialog box.
2) Look at the System thermometer bar. (If less than 20% of it is white, you
need to increase the system heap size.)
3) Copy down the number of "K" that is next to the System's thermometer bar.
4) Launch "HeapFixer."
5) In the box that should have a default setting of "80K above normal..."
concerning the system heap, increase that to the number you just copied
down from the "About Finder" dialog box. (It may seem like WAY to much,
but you actually probably need it!)
6) Quit HF.
7) Re-boot.

You should see things running a lot more smoothly after this. I have.

I hope some of you out there find this useful.

THanks for all of you who posted replies to my original query.
