[comp.sys.mac.system] Discrepancy in icon positioning in Finder 7.0

ldo@waikato.ac.nz (Lawrence D'Oliveiro, Waikato University) (12/13/90)

I noticed this when I first booted up the May 7.0a9 release. Now I see
it's still in the October 7.0b1 release: Finder 7.0 can't agree with
previous Finders on where the icons should go!

Specifically, within every disk or folder window, the icons representing
files and folders are offset down and to the right when viewed with
Finder 7.0. The distance looks like about 16 pixels down and 16 pixels
right--that is, something like half the height and width of an icon.

This happens in windows on both hard disks and floppy disks, so I don't
think it has anything to do with Desktop Manager (I'm running Desktop
Manager under the 6.0.x system).

Anybody else noticed this? Is it supposed to be a feature, rather
than a bug?

By the way, judging from the few hours I've spent running it so far,
the beta release is *much* improved over the previous alpha. The Finder
opens large folders at a usable speed now, and I think the system would
actually run on a two-megabyte machine.

Have you ever played with the LAYO resource located in the Finder with ResEdit?
You can control almost any aspect of icon placement. I guess they just shifted
them a bit in the copy you got. The way I like mine is tighter vertical spacing
with wider horizontal spacing for those really descriptive file names.

Regards

Unfortunately, at least as of System 7.0b1 there is no longer a LAYO
resource. You can only set 'staggered' or not in the 'Views' control panel,
but you have no control over the 'staggering'. I assume that there is a
new piece of info that controls this information, and I HOPE that there will
be some way to change the staggering (since the current style is icky), but
I have yet to find a way (I also haven't spent much time ;-)

This might seem obvious but7.0 has a control panel device
called view, maybe this is causing the discrepancy.

This is a bug, and we know about it. It will be fixed before we ship.

I take a close look at the 'fval' resource in Finder under System 7.0. The
latest versions of ResEdit has a template for 'fval' resources that shows
that most of Finder's view attributes are probably controlled by this resource.

Hard to tell though, since I've not had the time to play with it yet.

Well actually 7.0Beta doesn't use the LAYO resource to do its icon positioning
since the 7.0 finder doesn't have a 'LAYO' resource.

You can make some 'LAYO' type changes by using the Views cdev but it does
not allow you to change the horz and vert icon positioning. Which is a bummer
because the default grid won't let me lay an icon down at the very bottom of
the screen, its either below the bottom of the screen or about an inch from
the bottom.

I sincerely hope that they add this ability in 7.0 final.

Good to see that you're listening.

Now, could you (pretty please) just tell us where some of the other very
important bits from LAYO are hidden? Like, how to turn off the zoom
rectangles and the trash warnings?

Am I the only one who just hates them?
Maybe that stuff should go into the Finder Preferences (or whatever -- 7.0
doesn't run under A/UX yet)...

I don't know about the zoomrects (although I do understand how you feel
about them) but you can turn off the trash warnings by getting info on the
trash can. There's a check box at the bottom of the info window you can
click to turn off the warnings.
