[comp.sys.mac.system] appletalk versions

hive@intacc.uucp (XENe DADe axIS) (12/30/90)

How does one update the AppleTalk version as reported by
MacEnvy? ie. on our Plus it's version 19, on the IIci it's
52. My understanding is that AppleTalk resides in the ROM,
and then is subsequently patched by the System...
But we got some software that refuses to work with AppleTalk
below v.47, and demands that we update the AppleTalk.
The documentation, of course, doesn't offer any hints
whatsoever about how to do that...

Does anyone know anything about this?

Help!!!

Thanx in advance...

Your IIci has a file called 'AppleTalk' in the System Folder. Do a
'Get Info' on it and you will see that it is version 52. If there is no
AppleTalk file present, a Mac will run whatever version it has in ROM.

If you place an AppleTalk file (52 or earlier) in the System Folder, the
System 6 boot process will load the AppleTalk drivers from this file. Copy
the AppleTalk file from your IIci, and this should fix you up on your
Mac Plus.

Now for the fun; if you drag in an AppleTalk file version 53, nothing happens!
You get the version in ROM. For AppleTalk version 53 (it's the Phase 2
version of AppleTalk) you have to run the Installer program on any one of
the following products:
	Internet Router 2.0
	EtherTalk 2.0.x
	TokenTalk 2.0
	Network Products Installer Disk

As part of the installation process, a couple of resources are added to your
System File that are required for loading the version 53 AppleTalk file.

The Mac IIfx, IIsi, and LC have version 54 in ROM. There is no version 54
stand-alone AppleTalk file.

For System 7, the AppleTalk drivers (including ADSP) are all part of the
System File; no AppleTalk file is needed, and any file, if present, is ignored.

I have tried both 51 & 52 in my IIcx, but MacEnvy & Gestalt say I have 49
installed (presumably the ROM version), using 6.0.5. Any clues as to why,
and what am I missing out on, by not using the later versions? On a Mac+,
the later version does install.
Thanks for any info, I've been curious about this for a while.
