Hi, I've done something stupid. I was trying to get my CMS "Platinum" series hard disk to work after it failed today, and while running the CMS utility, managed to "update" the internal 80MB Apple hard disk (I believe it's a Quantum). It took only a fraction of a second, but seemed to overwrite the boot code or whatever and now the internal disk won't mount -- even though I've managed to make the CMS disk work, finally. So, does anyone know how to make the Apple disk recognizable again? I assume all I need to do is re-initialize the boot sectors or some such, but the Apple HD setup utility won't let me do anything except Initialize, which I DON'T want to do. Is there a utility to solve this problem? Can I reset to some bare default by twiddling the hardware? As an aside [end message, start rant] the CMS disk is the FOURTH disk I've had go belly-up on me just because the spindle wouldn't spin. Two I've had to give up on because there was no way to spin up the disk -- at least, none that I know of. The others I've been able to use by starting the spindle BY HAND. Now, think of this for a second. When my boat battery runs down, I start the outboard by pulling a rope. How far are we from needing pull-start handles on our hard disks? Criminy, it's a stupid world when I have to use lawn-mower technology to make a hard drive work. Can we perhaps find a lubricant that will last longer than a year? PLEASE?
