[comp.sys.mac.system] How can I improve the performance of Mac+?

hflai@squid.ucsb.edu (Hsun-Feng Lai) (01/30/91)

Recently, I found my Mac plus slows down while it duplicates files. It
takes very long(1 to 2 minutes) to update the desktop files. And sometimes, it
also takes long for the system to launch a application. The configuration
is as follows:

		Mac Plus with 2.5MB RAM
		LaCie 80MB HD and
		System 6.0.5

There are probably 2100 files on the HD and it 90% full. I used Norton and
DIsk Express II to optimize the disk, but they don't help much with the slow
desktop updating. The Norton Utility tells me that the system is using
B-Tree to keep the infomation about files. This really confuses me since the
update of a B-tree should be fast and it comes out poor. I don't know if
there is anything I can do with the slow-down. Any suggestion is welcomed,
either hardware or software patch.

Since you have a lot of files, you might want to try the Desktop
Manager INIT. The Desktop Manager overcomes some limitations
imposted by the normal Desktop, and makes opening large folders
faster. You can get the Desktop Manager from the Oscar archive on
	apple.com in /pub/dts/mac/hacks/Oscar.hqx.

Have you re-built your desktop recently?

There is also a SCSI accelerator software package for the Mac Plus.
I haven't tried it yet, but it is an INIT that speeds up hard disk
	access. Hope this helps...
