Maximum free space in 6.0x is acheived running just the normal finder,
which exits from the memory when the application is launched and loaded
back in when the application is finished (unless you've been mucking
about to change your default shell).  7.0 has "multifinder" built in.

The question is not that 7.0 only runs on the newer machines, it will run
if you want it to, but it really wasn't designed with the old machines in mind.
