Recently, I've got AppleShare (2.0.1) and installed it on a small LocalTalk network (2 Mac IIcx, 1 MacIIci and one SE/30 for the server). It works fine *except* that it reports a "disk error" (when copying in the finder) or just transfers garbge (depends on the application, wether it recognizes the error condition or not) about once per megabyte, and only when *reading* from the server. It happens more likely during massive data transfers such as copying a very big file or a folder with many files in it. We have a 9MB database file which fails to be copied from the server to a client with a probability of 99% (it worked *once*...). Of course, I tried numerous things to find out why it does not work: - All inits (except AppleShare) removed - Newest systems installed on all workstations (both 6.0.5 and 6.0.7 tried) - EtherTalk (Phase 1 & 2 as well as V2.0 and 2.1 tested) installed (so it *CAN'T BE* a LocalTalk (harwdare) problem!) - Switched off MultiFinder (to exclude possible memory problems) - Server installed on another Mac (IIcx) with a different harddisk drive. But nothing had any effect (neither made it worse nor better). What I could not do (yet), but intend to do (because no better ideas come to my mind any more) is - Formatting the server's harddisk with a different utility than OnTrack (for the highly inprobable case of a interference between AppleShare and the OnTrack SCSI driver) - Getting a new copy of AppleShare for the (also highly inprobable) case of a undetectable disk fault in my current copy. Besides that, I'm at the end of my repertoire (sigh!). Is there anybody out there on the net who has/had similar problems and - even more helpful - solutions to it? Any hint would be greatly apprechiated! Oh, btw: I asked our dealer, our Apple distributor and several people working with AppleShare before wasting bandwith here, but now you are my only hope (only as far as this *@!X& LAN is concerned :-) :-) Thanks a lot in advance! ========================== +---------------------------+ ***************** Lukas Zeller |\ E-Mail: /| * Never trust a * ETH Zurich, Switzerland | \_______________________/ | * computer * (SFIT, Swiss Federal | / zeller@ethz.UUCP \ | * bigger than * Institute of Technology) | / ..chx400!ethz!zeller \ | * you can lift * ========================== +---------------------------+ ***************** -- ========================== +---------------------------+ ***************** Lukas Zeller |\ E-Mail: /| * Never trust a * ETH Zurich, Switzerland | \_______________________/ | * computer * (SFIT, Swiss Federal | / zeller@ethz.UUCP \ | * bigger than *
