My problem actually turned out to be fixed by reinstalling 6.0.5 off of
the original disks using the "Install" program.  If you just copy them
over, you might have the problem I did where Getinfo wouldn't let me
change the finder memory limit.

Again.  Thanks for your expertise!!!

It sure is nice to come home from work (unix, Msdos) to use a machine that
doesn't complain (well, as much)...
