Just thought I'd update everyone on my latest run-in with Apple on the System 7.0 issue. To summarize, I bought my Mac on Feb. 26 though the University of Illinois. I'm expection delivery on Apr. 19. Well I'm obviously not getting System 7.0 right? Well I've got this poster that I was given by the University's Apple rep, that describes each Mac system. Under the heading System Software (included) it says "System Software 7.0" Well I just got off the phone with Apple in Cupertino, and they wont give me an answer to my question (i.e. Will I get sys7 and docs free?). They kind of hinted that I would have to pay for the upgrade (no freebies). They took my name and address to show record of the call and said I should talk to my dealer about the issue. Well, the dealer says I should call the Apple rep. in Chicago.....AARGH. This is where I started. So, what can I say, Is Apple going to SCREW all new purchasers out of Sys. 7.0 or do I just bring this poster to my dealer and say where are my disks? If you have an opinion on this (or you would like to know anything else about this poster) I'd sure like to hear it. It might be a good idea to e-mail me since this issue has already taken up alot of bandwidth. I'll summerize if there's alot of interest. Robert Cook (rcook@ncsa.uiuc.edu) p.s. Sorry if this got posted twice, I'm having a little trouble with a remote server.

I know the poster you're talking about. A four-page foldout entitled, "No matter which one you choose, a Macintosh is still a Macintosh." Right? The list you're talking about is on the back, under the heading "Details, Details, Details." If you look at the item that says "System Software 7.0", you'll see a footnote marker (1). The footnote says: "(1) Will support System Software Version 7.0 when it released. To use Version 7.0, systems will require at least 2 megabytes of RAM and a hard disk. Systems that do not have a PMMU will not be able to use the virtual memory features of Version 7.0" I don't see a single promise to provide System 7.0 and documentation free of charge if it is not available at time of shipping. Between that footnote/disclaimer, and the fact that Apple -will- ship System Software with your Mac (although not the version you want), I don't think that the poster's wording will be much of a tool in forcing Apple to give you 7.0 and docs without charge. Me, I'm pretty much resigned to paying for System 7.0 if I want the docs for it (and I do) - and I'm ordering my Mac this Friday, in all liklihood. -- Jim Gaynor - Systems Analyst 1 + "This is Serious.
