Which resources do I modify in System 7.0 to chage: (a) the default application that's used for orphaned TEXT and PICT files? Right now it's TeachText, but I've heard this can be changed. Can a different application be chosen for PICT than for TEXT? (b) the trash can? I have this neato-keen recycler icon that was recently put up on sumex, you see, but I can't find any trash can icon to replace in the System 7.0b1 Finder. Is this possible? And the, is it possible to actually change the name "Trash" that comes up beneath that icon to something else (like "Recycler")? This _should_ be possible to do by changing one more resource, but I can't find it. << Brian >> | Brian S. I changed the default application for TEXT to MPW Shell and PICT to MacDraw a few days ago, works well. The resource type is fmap and the ID is somewhere around 10000. >(b) the trash can? The icons of the trash can, disks and folders can be changed independently. What you have to do is do "Get Info" on the icon, click the icon in the top left corner and paste the new icon. -- ============================================================================== Gisli R. For the former, I wrote a System Extension (called Understudy) that lets you customize this behavior without modifying the Finder. Right now there is no user interface for it, so you customize it using ResEdit. Open the 2Map resource that is contains, and add document types and application signatures to the list. This list is added before the Finder's standard list, so it will override the default behavior. The 2Map resource comes customized such that MS Word, MacWrite 5.x, and Write Now documents are opened by MacWrite II (since that' the environment I have). Using that as a guide it should be possible to figure out how to customize it. Once you've customized the file, put it in your system folder and reboot. Since the file is small, I've included it below. It only works on System 7. I've been using it for a couple of weeks without any problems. If you have comments or questions, let me know.
