[comp.sys.mac.system] TrueType vs. FONT/NFNT

bruner@sp15.csrd.uiuc.edu (John Bruner) (03/21/91)

What's the search order for the different types of fonts? Assuming
the presence of a FOND, if there is a bitmapped FONT/NFNT at the
desired point size, is it used or ignored when TrueType is available?

The bitmap is used.

I think the default search order is to use a bitmap if one is available
at the right size, otherwise image the outline. But applications can override
this by calling a new routine SetOutlinePreferred, to force the use
of the outline in all cases.

By the way, there is always a FOND, even if there are no bitmaps.
The FOND resource is the one that carries the family ID, while the
sfnt, like an NFNT, has a totally random ID.

The sfnt ID is stored in the FOND as an entry for "size 0" of the font.
