[comp.sys.mac.system] TrueType: I want, I want ...

hpoppe@ncar.ucar.edu (Herb Poppe) (03/27/91)

I hope that Apple will release TrueType fonts for those most ubiquitious
fonts: Chicago, Geneva, Monaco and New York. These fonts look good on the
screen (I would quibble about New York); it would be nice if they could
look good when printed on high resolution devices without all the double,
triple, ... font size rigamarole.

And when that day comes - "Death to Font Substitution".

Even before TrueType, the distinction between bitmap fonts and Postscript
fonts (confused, in the bargin, with font substitution) baffles most of
the users I support. Now, with TrueType... I hope that Apple will work to
simplify (from the users point of view) font handling on the Mac. I look
forward to the day when bitmap only fonts are gone.

Ahhhggggg. No, no, please don't do this. Hopefully these fonts will
die in the near future, except perhaps for system use. Geneva and New York
are copies of Helvetica and Times, optimized for 72 dpi. Now that you
have TrueType, it will optimize for you, as necessary. Haven't you
ever wondered why "Font Substitution" came into existence?

When setting things up, I usually eliminate this possibility, by
eliminating these fonts as choices. For instance, I reset the
preferences on Word to Palatino (or whatever). I make the initial
choices for my users, which suits most of them perfectly well. The
others are taught about fonts and are then allowed to go their own
way, once they've been shown _why_ using these fonts is not a Good Thing.
(Times as a substitute for New York looks even worse than Times
as itself.)

Yup. All done. System 7.0b5 and later have them.

Yes, yes, all well and good, but what the world wants to know is if
Apple will release a TrueType version of the the one well and truly
*useful* bitmapped font, the one *everyone* loves to use, the one
I've done my resume in.... I speak, of course, of what else but

     San Francisco

How about it?

Any possibility Stylewriter owners will be able to get them before System 7.0?

There is a PostScript (Type 1 I *think*) version of San Francisco named
St. Francis. I think it is at sumex.stanford.edu, and I am sure it is at
mac.archive.umich.edu

And a TrueType version of it appeared on CompuServe late last week. So, now
you can do your ransom notes on the StyleWriter without purchasing ATM.

There was also a TrueType version of Architect. My guess is that now that
Metamorphosis Pro and other conversion utilities are shipping, you will see
a lot more TrueType fonts showing up on the various networks and services.

Would somebody be willing to post this fantastic font somewhere for those of
us who don't use CI$?

Peace and Long Life

In the matter of making these new trutype fonts available via ftp on apple.com
I'd wote with "yes, yes, yes" if I could... But unfortunately this is not a
democratic matter... :-(.
If the success of the truetype concept depended on the fast availabily of a lot
of very cheap ($0.0) typefaces... (the rest is on your imagination).

Oliver.
