[comp.sys.mac.system] Help!

nadeem@wam.umd.edu (Nadeem Malik) (04/10/91)

We are having trouble running a few applications like Illustrator,
Pagemaker, and Freehand at the same time under Multifinder. The
error we get is the Finder is out of memory. I have tried to make
the Application Memory Size in the Get Info box of the Finder larger
but without any luck as far as getting 3 pretty large applications
going at the same time.

This problem is on a IIfx with 20MB ram (only 14MB shows up in About
the Finder (System 7?)) There are quite a few devices mounted. An
internal hard disk, Apple external HD, GCC external HD, and a Mass Micro
Syquest. Please help, it is depressing not to be able run Multifinder
with a few applications.

Was increasing the Finder Application Memory Size heading in the right
direction?

Thanks for any help and advice.

To the net.mac.gurus:

My Mac recently crashed (due to OnCue, I think). After I rebooted, I noticed
that the icon displayed by the MMInit at boot time was just garbage (it
used to look like a little chip speeding away :-) ). Also, the desktop icon
for MMInit was just a plain document icon.

I tried rebuilding the desktop file, but nothing changed. I then removed
MMInit, and replaced it with a fresh copy, but no dice. Finally, I removed
MMInit, rebuilt the desktop file, and re-installed MMInit, and still nothing!
Oh yeah, I checked MMInit with Resedit, and its personal copies of its
icons look ok.

What am I doing wrong? Can anyone tell me (in as much detail as you care to)
exactly where the finder gets the icons it displays for a given file? I'm
assuming that they are somehow extracted from the init/cdev/application
document when it is first installed, and the icons are stored in the
desktop file, yes?

Can I fix this by hand (with Resedit, for example)? Does the fact that the
finder icon is missing bear any relation to the weirdness with the startup
icon? Just how does the startup icon get displayed?

Whew! I better stop or I'll end up with one big, run-on question :-)

Thanx in advance for any help!

P.S. Please reply by e-mail, unless you think this is of sufficiently
general interest. Again, thanx!
