[comp.sys.mac.system] Application problems under System 7.0b4, 7.0fc1

darin@druwa.ATT.COM (PowersDG) (04/12/91)

I recently received a copy of System 7.0b4.

Let me give a little background info...

Mac IIci, 8 Meg RAM, 128k Cache card
Quantum 105 Prodrive, System 6.0.5.

Procedures followed: I didn't reformat my hard disk to install 7.0,
however, I removed the system folder (6.05) before the installation commenced.
7.0 installed successfully, so I proceeded to work with some programs.
I normally run PowerStation, and after attempting to
boot that up, it was immediately obvious that 7.0 had some conflicts
(overwriting desktop windows, etc). At any rate, I rebooted again
and opened MS Word 4.00b from the desktop. It launched the program
and just before giving the "untitled" window, gave me a system error
"CHK error". Reboot...

Tried Excel 2.2a...same type error. Can't recall specifically
on each one but I do remember the "CHK error" message. Whether
it said "Excel CHK error" I don't recall. Reboot...

Tried Aldus Persuasion 2.0...same thing. Well, I tried various others,
with no success. Reboot...

Called local Apple developers for insight. Tried removing cache card,
disabling Extensions, all INITs,
etc. No luck. Apple sent me 7.0fc1 hoping the problem
would be solved. Followed above installation procedure (no reformat).
Attempted same programs, same error. Some other programs did boot up (Keyplan,
Deltagraph, PageMaker 4.01 and others).

After discussions with Apple, we began to suspect the hard drive (non-apple,
could not use HD SC setup for VM).
I called Quantum, but they said they've had no
similar problems with drives in their labs...pointed me to the format program
(Storware). Called them but they also claim no similar occurrences.

By the way...Apple has been *very* conscientious in responding to my
problem/questions, a pleasure to deal with. Still a bummer that the problem
isn't solved, though.

After that long history...anyone got any suggestions or had similar problems?
Please respond via E-mail.

PS. Just talked to another friend to whom I loaned the 7.0fc1 to see what
problems he might have...he loaded without any hiccup whatsoever (boots up
in Word, Excel, etc.)--he has a Mac IIx, 80 Meg Apple hard drive.
