[comp.sys.mac.system] system problem?

stcroix@engin.umich.edu (William Stcroix) (04/16/91)

We have been having problems with a few Macs recently. One Machine,
in particular has had the problem re-occur on an almost daily basis.

The problem:

Strange characters (control characters and others) show up in
the control panel for the time and date. They also show up in super
clock. When typing numbers into an Excel spreadsheet, you also get these
strange characters.

This has occurred on a Mac II, SE, and 2 IIci's. It is recurrent on the
Mac II.

To solve the problem, we can only install new system software. This only
solves the problem on that one machine for approximately one day.

We have run Disinfectant 2.4 and Norton Utilites. They have found no
problems at all. We have changed to system 6.0.5 from 6.0.4 with no
change in the problem. We have trashed the system file and replaced it
with a new fresh clean file and still the problem is re-occuring.

Has anyone else encountered this type of thing?? Is this a virus that
perhaps is yet undiscovered?? Any and all ideas welcomed!

	Bill

1) is the battery dead? (the one that runs the clock)
2) try zapping the PRAM. (hold down option, shift, and command and open the
control panel)
