raisch@Control.COM (Robert Raisch) (04/17/91)
I am running a small ether based Internet, which is gatewayed out to
the INTERNET.
I have two MAC II class machines, one of which has a laser printer attached.
I also have a slew of hosts that are not Mac compatible, (Unix, DOS, etc.)
Thus:
                  +-----------------+
                  | laser printer |
                  +------+----------+
                         |
                         | (AppleTalk)
                         |
                +--------+-------+
                | MAC II (MAC.1)|
                | running |
                | Wollongong's |
                | LPR package |
                +--------+-------+
                         |
                         | (Ethernet)
                         |
                         |
    |=======+============+=========+============|
            | |
            | |
    +-------+-------+ +--------+--------+
    | Another MAC II| | Sun 4 |
    | (MAC.2) | | |
    +---------------+ +-----------------+
Ok, I can print just fine from the Sun to the laser printer, and of course
from MAC.1 to the printer, but I really need to be able to print, invisibly,
from MAC.2 to the printer.
Will the AppleTalk Internet Router from Apple solve this problem, or am
I faced with the expensive proposition of purchasing a GatorBox?
Thanks /rr

I am using the Internet Router in a similar case: 2 PCs with Ethernet connected to a MacIIsi with Ethernet and LaserWriter on LocalTalk. If you run the Router on the Mac it will produce 2 zones (EtherTalk + LocalTalk) which can be seen by everybody on the net. It does much the same than a Gatorbox BUT it runs in the background on your Mac which serves as gateway. Thus don't expect to do a lot of network transfers AND be a poweruser of your Mac. If you're only dealing with printing (as I do) it runs pretty fine with much less costs than a Gator or Kinetics.
