[comp.sys.mac.system] Disinfectant and Compatibility Checker

llvvll@mixcom.COM (James R. Macak) (05/14/91)

Since John Norstad is at the Apple Developer's Conference and may not be able
to respond to questions about System 7 and Disinfectant, I'd like to offer
some info that I have regarding the Compatibility Checker, etc. (My source is
John Norstad... I am a member of the group offering a bit of help in his
Disinfectant development efforts.)

Upon running the release version of the System 7 Compatibility Checker stack,
the following may be reported regarding the Disinfectant INIT:

"Turn the sofware off before installing System 7. If you have version 2.5, you
can turn the software back on after installing. Please contact the developer
for more information."

The above is apparently based on information that John Norstad furnished to
Apple when he still had plans for a Disinfectant v. 2.5, which was to have
been released within a week or two of the release of System 7. To the best of
my knowledge, John will NOT release Disinfectant v. 2.5. Rather than produce a
"quick fix" version for System 7, he has decided to work on a more compatible
version, the release of which is likely a few weeks away.

As John Norstad has previously stated, the current version of Disinfectant,
version 2.4, works well under System 7, save for a few problems. Perhaps the
two most important are: 1) an infected System 7 Finder cannot be disinfected
if it is the startup Finder, and 2), the Disinfectant INIT must still load
last, so it should not be placed in any folder within the System Folder of
System 7.

The currently available Disinfectant 2.4 will still detect all known Macintosh
viruses (save for the recent HyperCard script virus) on a Mac running System
7. Furthermore, Disinfectant 2.4 can repair infected files under System 7,
save for the problem noted above.

In summary, System 7 users can continue to use Disinfectant 2.4. There is no
Disinfectant 2.5, despite its appearance in the Compatibility Checker report.
