I prefer MasterJuggler, because it "thinks" about things like I do, but either one can help remove the clutter of fonts, DAs, sounds etc. Disclaimer: Just a happy customer with a severely uncluttered System folder since getting MasterJuggler. ______________________________________________________________ | Rick McCormack | IMAGISTICS BUSINESS THEATRE TECHNOLOGY | | Vancouver, BC | Information transfer - with a purpose. | | CANADA | ________________________________________ | | AOL: Rique | INTERACTIVE COMPREHENSIVE ENLIGHTENING | |________________|____________________________________________|

Is there a way to reorganize the contents of the System Folder ? ie to move the too many files it contains in various sub-folders while everything still keeps on working normally (of course) ? When I open my System Folder I find it hard to believe the Mac has moved for years to a Hierarchical File System ! So, is there any utility around there (init/cdev or other) ? Also will it be a feature of the long awaited system 7? The reason why I ask this is that when one has a Japanese System with KanjiTalk (which keeps tens of font files in the System Folder) and also tens of inits, cdevs and wdevs which add to the regular system files along with the various preference and data files some application need to have located there, well, then the number of files becomes so high that not only it takes minutes for the System Folder to open but sometimes it cannot open at all ("not enough memory..."). I wish I could see instead only a few folders, say, "System Files", "Printer&HD Drivers", "Basic Cdevs", "Extra Cdevs", "Fonts, DAs etc.", "Appl. Preferences", "Dictionnaries" and so on so forth. Well, you might want to try the utility "Tidy It Up!" which organizes the placement of files inside your system folder. It just makes things neater so that you can see where things are without looking through hundreds of entries. It sorts them by type, using the Type & Creator as criteria. It makes groups of CDEVs, INITs, etc. Another thing you might want to try and get is Set Paths, from Bruce Tomlin, the same author of SoundMaster. It allows you to set paths for different folders in your system folder, so all of those fonts can reside in a folder, and the system will think that there are actually in the system folder. It seems to work, and I haven't had a problem with them. Both of these programs should be available at suemx-aim.standford.edu (36.44.0.6). At worst, I can send you a copy of them to you if you can't find them. | Jeff Wolman | I am NOT Mad as a Hatter! | | (314)862-2900/889-5397 | My swinging from the rafters is not | | jdw4374@cec2.wustl.edu | actually happening; it just looks | | AOL: JeffW15 | like it. Try tidy-it-up, which is available by anonymous ftp
from sumex-aim.stanford.edu. (info-mac/util/tidy...).

It's an application that rearranges all the icons in your system folder such that, when viewed by small icon, everything is lined up and sorted according to user-definable categories like CDEVs, INITs, fonts, etc. It's shareware and I'm pretty sure it's available at sumex. -Kevin Bolduan KSBOLDUAN@AMHERST

I don't know where it is available now, it was distributed over comp.binaries.mac around 2 years ago.
