[comp.sys.mac.system] MS Word 4.00A vs. System 7

ralph@cs.stanford.edu (Ralph Melton) (05/17/91)

This is not a flame on Apple.

I got System 7 and installed it with great gusto. I like it a lot.

The Compatibility Checker said that Microsoft Word 4.00A was fully
compatible with System 7, one of the few products on my hard drive
to qualify. Of course, this is completely based on Microsoft's report,
and Microsoft tends to be loath to acknowledge that their programs
are short of perfection.

I've had two relatively minor problems with MicroSoft Word 4.00A since
I've installed System 7.

1) With experimentation, I managed to show that when file sharing is on,
Microsoft Word 4.0A hangs when the Quit command is executed. This happens
when File Sharing is the only extension running. This may be related to
the fact that I am not actually connected to a network; I had just turned
on file sharing in order to look at the new features. Since I wasn't
dependent on file sharing, I turned it off, and Word now quits fine.

2) This is a truly bizarro weirdness--not quite a full-fledged bug, but
definitely a weirdness.

When Word starts up, it displays its splash screen "Microsoft Word 4.00A ..."

Using ResEdit, I added a "WORD" entry to Word's 'BNDL' resource, so that
I could drop MacWrite files on my desktop alias of Word and have Word
open them. This works great; I didn't even have to reboot to get the
desired functionality.

Now, however, the splash screen displays the legend "NMicrosoft Word 4.00A ..."
The extra N at the beginning of that is _not_ a typo on my part; it is
the change in the splash screen.

Full of bemusement, I replaced Word with a copy from the locked master disk.
It showed no extra N when I started up, but after I added the 'WORD' file
type to the 'BNDL' in this clean copy, the extra N reappeared.

Has anybody else noticed this behavior? Can anyone explain why Word is
doing this?

Thanks,

Ralph
