[comp.sys.mac.system] 7.0 from a dealer?

jpf10694@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu (Joseph Peter Fleck) (05/14/91)

Hello,
I just got off the phone with a Forsythe Computer dealer here
in NorthWest Indiana, and he said "No, 7.0 should be out in a couple of
days" to which I replied "It's May 14th today.. It was supposed to be
out yesterday..." After discussing this further, he told me that the
only way to get it was to buy the whole package. I asked if I could just
bring in some high dens, but he said no. Is this true? Can someone
clarify this for me before I go running off to some dealer? Please
e-mail an answer if you don't mind. Thanks.

I work with a university micro store (with them, not for them). With the
advent of system 7.0, the size of the system has become a lot larger and having
people come in off the streets to copy disks is not as practical. We've also
found problems with people coming in to copy system software, and "just happen"
to pick up copies of commercial software that is also on our Macs (there for
demonstration purposes). This will not do.

So our plan for 7.0 is that we will have some students who work for us do the
copies of the floppies. We'll sell those for a buck per disk, or something
like that, so it won't cost the user much more than buying blank floppies. The
objective is not to make a buck, it's to solve the hassles of lots of people
showing up and expecting immediate access to a Mac just to make copies of the
system software.

So, I can't speak for your dealer, but it sounds like they might be up to
something similar. If you absolutely must have it today, you have to buy the
package from Apple. If you can wait a few days you should be able to get
copies of the floppies for a minimal cost.

Whoops, didn't mean to post that...

RPI folk please note, those are our PLANS. The RPI store hasn't actually
received system 7.0 yet, so don't come running down expecting to pick up a copy
of the new system software yet!!!

This dealer is unfortunately experiencing what most of us are... System 7
is in extremely short supply. We only got TWO of the Personal Upgrade Kits
in time for the release, and only because we paid for overnight shipping.
As a result, we haven't been able to SELL any copies of the official
package. We instead made copies for people to purchase.

Not all dealers will do this, though... dealers are under no OBLIGATION
to provide anything other than the Apple product versions of the upgrades,
the Personal Upgrade Kit ($99) and the Group Upgrade Kit ($349). It's
simply something that we CAN do, since we are licensed to distribute the
software.

Like the campus computer store employee who followed up to your posting,
my company is selling pre-copied sets of system disks ($20 for a set, which
is actually based on our $2 per disk single-disk price). We ARE letting
people copy the disks if they REALLY want to use their own disks, but
since we charge for computer time, it's not free.

Good luck getting System 7! I have no doubt you'll find a dealer or a
licensed user group who'll provide an inexpensive copy for you.
