[comp.sys.mac.system] `Correct' way to customize international resources & change Trash?

bskendig@phoenix.Princeton.EDU (Brian Kendig) (05/19/91)

I'd like to modify my System (7.0) so it displays times, dates,
numbers, and other such things differently, I know that in order to do
this, I have to change certain resources.

(1) Which resources do I change? I see an `INTL', an `itl0', and an
`itl1' that seem to contain duplicate resources, and an `itl2' and
`itl4' that don't have templates in ResEdit 2.1 so I can only read
them in hex. Do I change both the "month-day" INTL #1 and "number"
INTL #0 and leave the `itl's alone, or do I change the "number" itl0
#0 and the "month-day" itl1 #0, or do I make the same modifications to
each pair? Are the `itl2' #0 and `itl4' #0 important to change too?

(2) Does it matter that I can't save the resources compressed after I
modify them? This won't cause any problems -- will it?

(3) All the resources are named "U.S." If I change them but leave the
names the same, will this confuse the machine because it expects
"U.S." resources to always be set a certain way? Can I or should I
change the name to something else? Similarly, in the "month-day"
resource, should I leave the `country code' set to 00 (US), or can I
or should I change it? Can/should I just leave the U.S. resources as
they are, and create copies of them to rename and modify to my heart's
desire -- and if I do this, then how do I get my machine to use my new
international resources instead of the old ones?

(4) Is there any standard Apple localizer program for System 7.0
that'll let me make the necessary changes without mucking through the
System file with ResEdit?

Another thing I'd like to do (yeah, call me `environmentally
correct'... ;) is change the "Trash" to the "Recycler". Where in the
System or the Finder is the name "Trash" kept so I can change it on
the desktop? (I've found the icon for it in the System file.)

Hmm, come to think of it, I'd have to modify the Special menu, too.
I've heard that there are `fmnu' resources in the Finder to change;
what do I do to change them without screwing things up?

Thanks for any light you might shed on the subject!
