First the good news for those who try to download Mac PostScript to printers e.g. on a unix network. The System 7 LaserWriter driver no longer needs patching to print via other operating systems. The Print dialog has a PostScript File button, and you can even tell it where to put the file. You can background the PostScript generation by turning background printing on. Now the bad news. Despite the better header, the PostScript generated by specific applications may make your printer unhappy. Here's a brief report: o MS Word - printed first 3 pages OK, don't know why the 4th upset it - no graphics or other complication o Nisus - similar document (including MacDraw graphics, past the point where PostScript generated from Word died) printed OK o MacDraw II document with lines, oval, rectangle, text (including lines thinner than 1 point) printed OK o MacDraw II document with colour printed partially OK, but seemed to die on the part that should have been colour printed as grey I'm not sure if PostScript from the older drivers was any better or worse (I do recall problems printing MS Word-generated PostScript in the past). -- Philip Machanick philip@pescadero.stanford.edu
