Greetings. I'm trying to avoid calling Apple's tech support 900 number at $2 a minute. Hopefully this problem is common enough to justify spending the net's money instead of mine... I installed System 7.0 (obtained from my local user's group) without a hitch, and rebooted. Everything works fine, except that ONE of the (hard) partitions on my external hard drive doesn't want to behave. Not only can I not paste an icon onto it (paste is still greyed in the edit menu), but I can't even change it's name! Rebuilding desktops, running Disk first aid, etc has been unhelpful. All my other drives are fine, even other partitions on the external drive. Anyone have a clue what's up? The drive in question is _not_ my system disk. It had (and still has) no problems under 6.0.7. Also, compatibility checker freezes trying to read the partition past the "broken" one, under 6.0.7 and 7.0. My system: Mac IIcx, 40 meg (apple) internal, 80 meg (cutting edge) external, 8 meg memory. No unusual peripherals. Clues? --Chris

[...] One thing in System 7 that will prevent the names of hard disks from being changed is File Sharing, so you might want to make sure that File Sharing is turned off in "Sharing Setup" control panel. I can't say that this is the source of your troubles for sure, but it is one possible cause. 'hope this helps. ----Chris ----chrisj@emx.utexas.edu
