[comp.sys.mac.system] sys7 and appletalk networks

choda@milton.u.washington.edu (Bob Marley) (05/20/91)

I am one of the operators at our LAN that runs under Appletalk, and I am
thinking of upgrading it to System 7. Several problems surface.

First off, is it possible to use system 7 on a LAN? If so, would it only
be used with the server and not the seperate workstations (as workstations
are just your standard 800k floppies, there isnt much room...)? Or is
it possible to have it so that everyone who uses it is able to access
the advantages of the big Seven? If so, how? Has anyone done this yet?
I don't like messing around with the LAN as is (its pretty shaky, change
one thing, and one init... and you are toast) so I am pretty cautious....

Any help would be greatly apprecaited!

You can use 7.0 on workstations, but as far as I know, NOT on the server. I
believe you need AppleShare 3.0 to be using System 7.0.

Well, if you're running floppy-only workstations, 7.0 is out for them.

What do you have running on your network? I've got 40-odd machines and 8
printers on one network and most machines have at least a half-dozen non-Apple
inits running without problems.

I'm using 7.0 on my machine to give people access to some of my files. They
won't have access to anything 7.0-related, i.e. no TrueType etc.

(Hmm, no there's an idea. Use INITShare to access the TrueType init on a
server.)
