Lawyers. Apple sued DRI over GEM; one of the things DRI agreed to do in the settlement was to move its trash can from the lower right to the lower left. This was done ostensibly to reduce the chance that someone looking at GEM might think it was looking at a Macintosh. Therefore, Apple's Trash can and its location are forever sacred.
