Earlier today, I received some mail from "Jeffrey D. Illian" <ji08+@andrew.cmu.edu> concerning 16 color icons "disappearing" under System 7.0. Jeff found the cause and the solution ... but I didn't see his posting here, so I thought I'd let the world know the answer .... Of course, some of you may be asking "What's the problem?" Well, if you ever thought to change the colors in the Label menu, this could effect you. Demonstration: Activate the LABELS cdev. Click once on any of the colors. Slide the brightness control (the slider on the right hand side of the screen) all the way up -- max brightness. Accept the new color setting, and close the LABELS cdev. Open the MONITORS cdev. Set the colors to 16. Any windows that are set to icon (or small icon) view will look correct UNTIL you click outside the MONITORS box. Then, all the icons will revert to their 2-bit (ie, clear) mapping. The only way to 'retrieve' the 16 color images is to reset the brightness control for the label you changed. Once again, thanks to Jeff for figuring out what was going on ... It had me stumped! I thought icon resources were getting mangled somehow... -rob. -- /---------------------------------------------------------------------------\ | R.
