From the {Wall Street Journal}, 22 May 91 at B1 "OPERATING SOFTWARE BECOMES MORE VERSATILE "The trend in operating software is toward one system that fits all types of computers. "The most popular operating software today controls the basic functions of only one class of machines. DOS-Windows software runs just on Intel Microprocessors, while Apple Computer's Macintosh software runs solely on Motorola chips. "In the future, consumers will be able to but almost any type of hardware and still use their favorite software systems. MicroSoft has widely publicized its efforts to build a `portable' version of DOS-Windows that will run on virtually any processor. Apple has hinted that it has similar plans but has withheld details. "Now people close to Apple say the company's goals are even more ambitious than MicroSoft's. Apple has assembled a team of at least 100 engineers on a software project code-named `Pink.' The new system software, still at least a few years from completion, is being designed to run on everything from a mainframe to a laptop. "What's more, `Pink' is supposed to work on machines powered by dozens of processors, including some parallel processing hardware that will keep pace with some of the fastest computers of today." ============================================================================ 100 engineers? Now we know why they're too busy to do 32-bit clean ROM upgrades. * Origin: mingo@well.sf.ca.us mingo@cup.portal.com (1:109/421.4218)
