I just upgraded to system 7 via download from ftp.apple.com (no manuals). Most of it makes sense (and lots of nice improvements), but here's one mystery: After installation, I looked through the installation disks (actually installation folders, I used the net.install stuff), and found a folder called "Desktop Folder". It had a plain icon, and was empty, but when I tried to drag it to the root level, I got some message saying I wasn't allowed to. I'm guessing "Desktop Folder" is a reserved name for a useful gadget, but I'm at a loss as to whether that folder was actually one of those gadgets, or just a pain folder masquerading as something else. If it's not the real thing, any idea how to get one? If it's the real thing, please give me a hint what to do with it. Balloon help said nothing, and I don't have TFM. Thanks for any hints. Please don't spend much time on this; it doesn't seem to be causing any problems, just curiosity. -- Russell owen@astro.washington.edu

Files that are left on the desktop for easy access show up in the desktop folder instead when you reboot your machine with system 6.0x. You shouldn't be able to see the desktop folder itself when running system 7 I think... -Michael Zajac mzajac@ccu.umanitoba.ca
