Can SOMEONE PLEASE give me a clue with this. I can't use System 7 unless I can solve this problem.. My setup. Mac+ 4MB (second rev ROMs - standard beige Plus) HP 310MB (formatted) SCSI hard drive - 5 1/4 full height I don't have the model # handy. The reset line on the SCSI bus is cut because of the Unit Attention bootup problem The SCSI bus is terminated internally in the drive No other SCSI devices. Silverlining 5.25/10 - Only handshaking loops enabled, no blind reads or writes. System 6.0.5, 6.0.7, 7.0 (problem is worse on later systems) INITS - doesn't matter: none through many: no additional effect. The HD is hard partitioned into 9 or 10 32MB partitions with 2 smaller partitions 8MB and 12MB. I tend to have between 5 and 8 partitions/disks mounted at any one time. My problem: The system will hang with the disk select light ON necessitating a power cycle on the drive (because of the cut reset line) before manually rebooting. This happens MOST frequently during Finder Copies of 150K+ worth of files. It will happen occaisionally during an application launch or when loading a large document into an application. This has NEVER happened when copying even HUGE files using the File Tools DA or the DeskZap DA. It also has never happened from any application document write, extract or save. It HAS happened a couple of times on ShutDown while the Norton File Saver was running. Other Symptoms I CAN NOT make it fail running Silverlining in test or diagnostic mode. Silverlining has NEVER found any errors in testing even during one overnight run. As long as I remember to NOT use the finder to copy files, system 6.0.5 almost never exhibits the problem (every once in a while though... ) The problem seemed noticeably worse on system 6.0.7 but I never used 6.0.7 long enough to really be sure. The problem is SIGNIFICANTLY worse with system 7.0. The funny part is that the finder copy problem has NOT occurred. Instead I have REPRODUCEABLY hang while launching particular applications or when an application was trying to load a particular file. When I originally called LaCie up about this problem the person I talked to was clueless. The only suggestion they could make was to reduce the number of partitions I divided the disk into or mount fewer of them. Neither worked. Any help, clue, person to call, or whatever would be gratefully appreciated. Peter C peter@viewlogic.com -- (O)(O)(O)(O)(O)(O)(O)(O)(O) (O)(O)(O)(O)(O)(O)(O)(O)(O) (O) !the doctor is out! I have run into no problems with Silverlining 5.28 on my 4 meg Mac SE, 80 and 40 meg Quantums, and System 7.0. tim shea LAN Admin International IS&DP 3M, Inc.

I've been running system 7 with Silverlining 4.06 with no problems on a 4MB Mac+ with an 80MB Quantum drive. I guess they don't make them like they used to. Larry Shupe lshupe@milton.u.washington.edu
