[comp.sys.mac.system] What version of Suitcase works with System 7?

tmyers@oucsace.cs.OHIOU.EDU (Tim Myers) (05/11/91)

I have an older version of Suitcase. Does anyone know what version
of the program is compatible with System 7.0?

Suitcase II version 1.2.9 is System 7.0-compatible. (Version 1.2.8
says it is, but it *isn't*.) You can get a program to update any
earlier version of Suitcase II to 1.2.9 from any ftp site worth its
bits.

System 7.0 makes it easier to live without Suitcase II, but Suitcase
II is still useful in a few ways -- you can use fonts by opening a
suitcase in less time than it takes to say "World-Wide Developers'
Conference" rather than dragging gobs of font files into and out of
your System file, and Suitcase II still supports fkey suitcases where
System 7.0 still doesn't.

Suitcase II 1.2.9 is nominally the 7.0-compatible version. I say
"nominally" because some time between 7.0f2c2 and 7.0 final, a change was
made to System 7 that causes the following problem: after opening a
suitcase file and quitting the Suitcase II desk accessory, any attempt to
use a resource in the file will fail, with results ranging from the
unexpected (opening a DA in the suitcase causes a beep) to disastrous. If
the file is to be reopened at startup (the default setting), it will open
correctly at the next startup. So the workaround for 1.2.9/7.0 users is to
immediately restart the Mac after opening a suitcase file or files and
quitting the Suitcase II DA.

Suitcase II 1.2.10 will fix this. An Updater application to update your
version of Suitcase II 1.2 or later should be available on CompuServe,
GEnie, America Online, and AppleLink some time next week. Anyone who
wants to obtain it from one of those sources and post it to this net is
welcome to do so. The Updater will probably be for a beta version of
1.2.10, as it will not yet have gone through the full test cycle
appropriate for an "official" release.

I am the author of Suitcase II.

Version 1.2.9 is supposed to be compatible. There is an updater file around somewhere.

Suitcase II 1.2.10 is absolutely required for System 7.0. It just came out a day or so ago. It's a 49K Compact Pro .sea file containing only the updater. All the version history is contained within the application. Steve fixed a bunch of things that came up at the last minute, and added a neat hack for DAs that use the standard file dialog.

According to the Apple Sys 7.0 literature, V1.2.9 works with System
7.0.

REQUEST: Could you send the V1.2.10 updater to Sumex-Aim? Thanks

the compatability checker is wrong. 1.2.9 is really buggy under sys7

I've sent a binhexed copy off to info-mac. This is the first file I've ever
sent to sumex, so I have no idea how long it takes to be available publically.
