[comp.sys.mac.system] ftp.apple.com update...

mjohnson@Apple.COM (Mark B. Johnson) (05/24/91)

ftp.apple.com [130.43.2.3] has been up for about 22 hours now with few
signs of problems (the load has been reduced significantly with the new
limiters we have put on it).

Given this, we have a few nice additions and a few surprises...

First, however, I want to thank all the folks who have sent their
supportive messages to the newsgroups as well as my personal account.
We appreciate your support and understanding of the task at hand. Now
on to the real news...

As far as System 7.0 is concerned, the fdhd images are now available in
the following directory: /ftp/dts/mac/system7/7.0.software/fdhd.images

These should decode and unpack just fine. Sorry for the delays on
them. For people transferring the network installation version, you
really only need this for network installs and can actually produce
this by copying the floppy disks onto a hard disk and moving the
Installer and Install Script to the same level of the folders. So
don't bother copying both the net install and one of the floppy
versions. You CANNOT, however, make bootable floppies from the net
install, so if you only get one, the floppies are your best bet.

Bigger news, however, is that thanks to Tom Chavez and Gary Little,
product managers for MacsBug and ResEdit respectively, we now have both
products on ftp.apple.com (/ftp/dts/mac/tools/). It has taken us a
long time, but they are there (MacsBug V6.2.1 and ResEdit 2.1). NOTA
BENE - We have permission to redistribute these from ftp.apple.com, but
this does NOT mean that any site can offer these files for
redistribution or that they are to be treated like much of the net
content. The are copyrighted, licensed products. If you wish to offer
them at an FTP site or on a BBS, you need to obtain a license from
SW.LICENSE@AppleLink.Apple.com. Thanks for your cooperation with
this. Since I promised them I would give the plug, you should note
that you can purchase documentation for these products from APDA (800)
252-2732.

We have moved some documentation, pcl (lisp), hacks, and a few other
directoriesfrom apple.com over and have even started moving some of the
Apple II stuff over. We are still working on the rest of Developer
Essentials, including Technical Notes, Sample Code, SpInside Macintosh,
etc., etc. Thanks for your patience with these.

So have at, but know that we are still tracking down a few minor bugs
in the ftp daemon. Also note that MGET does not currently work and we
are working on it. With a lot of luck the machine will remain up, but
if you find it down, just be patient and we'll get it restarted as soon
as possible. Given its track record since the last changes we made, it
should be a bit more reliable than it was last week.

Thanks for your patience, and enjoy.

Since I hadn't gotten a chance to yet I want to add my appreciation
for Mark Johnson and the rest of the crew at Apple you guys are the
greatest! and System 7.0 is pretty nifty too! I just got around to
installing it this afternoon and I'm still saying gee-whiz...
Once again, thanks for all the great work and keep up the great work.
