[comp.sys.mac.system] "Popping" up a directory

elliot@ocf.berkeley.edu (Elliot Wilen) (05/25/91)

I'm looking for a way to do something that would neatly complement the
effect of option-double-click in the Finder. Given an open window in the
Finder, is there a way to open the parent directory without starting all
over again at the root? Is there an INIT that will allow this to be done?
Can it be done in System 7?

Please reply directly to me; I will post a summary of the responses.

If I know nothing else about System 7, I now know that System
7 includes this capability through both keyboard shortcuts and a mouse
click. (Thanks to Philip Machanick (philip@pescadero.stanford.edu), Doc
(oleary@ux.acs.umn.edu), Matt (MKH6317@ZEUS.TAMU.EDU), and Thomas Lunde
<tlunde@umaxc.weeg.uiowa.edu>.) If I understand correctly, the keyboard
command is command-uparrow, which can be combined with option to close
the current directory. The mouse equivalent involves holding down the
command key whilst clicking on the title bar, which yields a popup menu
similar that in the file-get and file-save windows found in applications.

proteus@medisg.Stanford.EDU (Gregg L. Kasten) replied that he had found
a way to use Resedit and alter System 6.0.5 that a double-click in a window's
titlebar opens the window's parent. He didn't remember exactly what he had
done, though. If anyone knows how to do this, I'd love to hear from you.
Again, I'll summarize whatever I find out.

Thanks!

John R. Gersh (gersh@aplpy.jhuapl.edu) came through with the solution
for Systems prior to 7.0. Using Resedit, open the Finder's LAYO
(resource 128) and set the option "Titlebar Click" to 1. (You must be
using a relatively recent version of Resedit, incidentally. Version
1.0.4, which I first tried, doesn't see this option.) A double click
in the titlebar of a window in the Finder will now bring up the
window's parent.

As always use Resedit with caution, working only on a *copy* of your
working Finder.

I also discovered that you can make this same modification without Resedit
if you use Layout. (I have version 1.8.) For those who don't know,
Layout is a free program available at sumex (try the
/info-mac/utilities directory). In addition to being able to modify
the titlebar click, it can also change a few other Finder parameters,
including the pattern and spacing of icons in windows.

To be able to double click on the title bar in sys 6.0x and have it
open the parent folder, you can use the shareware Layout (which also
edits lots of other finder stuff) or use Resedit and turn on the
"title bar click" function.

Is there a way to get this with System 7? I really miss the feature, and
 yes, I know about Pretzel/UpArrow.
