Well, I finally manage to ftp all of System 7 from apple. (Thanks you, mjohnson for working so hard to make System 7 available via ftp.) I made my masters with DiskCopy 4.1 and everything's okay. The installation was straight-forward. I love the new Finder, esp. the hierarchical view. Here's a list of comments problems, and other stuff: o Is it me or is my SE noticeably slower now? Operations in the Sys 6 Finder such as activating windows, dragging, and so forth are definitely slower. This is a 4Mb SE. o A cold boot seem to be esp. slow. I didn't time it but I recall the `Welcome to Macintosh' message going away much faster under 6. o The Application menu is great. Esp. since it improves upon AppMenu by allowing one to switch into a specific DA instead of just the DA Handler. o Is there any way to suppress the dialog box that pops up every now and then when you empty the trash can? As well, under 6, if you've set the Skip Warning bit in LAYO, items that are locked are trashed as well. Under 7, they aren't. I've already unchecked the Warning box from Get Info on Trash. o How do I get MasterJuggler to work? Under 6, MJ adds a hierarchical menu to the Apple menu. Under 7, I've put MJ into the Extensions folder and added an alias into the Apple Menu Items folder but when I choose MJ in the Apple menu, I get a dialogue box telling me to put MJ into the Extension folder. (But it is...) The June MacUser suggests that one keep MJ around. How does one do it? (BTW, I know that it is loaded since I see its icon at startup. I can't invoke any of its function thru my previously defined keystrokes.) o This is a weird problem I've got. Whenever anything is launched (including the Finder at startup), there's a loud beep. This isn't the little click from the new Sound Manager and it isn't the custom beep but the loud beep.. I've checked everything and I can't understand why it is making this sound. Incidentally, under Where from Get Info on my HD reports `unknown drive'. (Under 6, this has read `AppleShare'. This is a standalone machine. Why is this? Could this be the cause of the beep?) o The System partition right now takes up about 1800K. Is this about right? o Someone previously asked if OzTeX 1.3 is okay under 7. Yes it is. I've TeX some of my old assignments. However, I haven't gotten around to printing yet. Any comments/solution to the above would be appreciated. But all in all, System 7 is worth the wait. Anyone who's just waiting around should grab a copy and try it. You'll like it. (I certainly do.) Right now, I'm gonna fire up ResEdit and make a few more customizations... George

Funny that, my SE seems *alot* faster... from bootup to stuff in the finder. Yes, 7 is quite a bit more integrated. At least, the System folder is less cluttered. One thing I really like is that you can skip the items in the Startup Folder by holding down the shift after you get the menubar. > > george> o A cold boot seem to be esp. slow.
