[comp.sys.mac.system] Silverlining versions & System 7.0

delaney@xn.ll.mit.edu (John R. Delaney) (05/29/91)

I finally got through to the (overwhelmed) Tech. Support people at
LaCie and got my questions answered (plus some extra information). Since
some others of you out there might have similiar questions, I thought I
would share what I was told.

1) Silverlining version 5.30 is the official System 7.0 compatible
version. And it hasn't shipped yet; it is due out next week.

2) Silverlining version 5.29 was skipped.

3) Silverlining version 5.28 will install drivers that are fully System
7.0 compatible. The program is not necessarily compatible in all
ways; use it under System 6.0.X (i.e., boot from the distribution
floppy).

4) Silverlining version 5.27 will install drivers that are 24-bit but
not 32-bit compatible. Also, password protecting your boot volume
won't work (but does work in version 3.28). And the program is not
necessarily compatible in all ways; use it under System 6.0.X (i.e.,
boot from the distribution floppy).

5) Earlier Silverlining versions did not install drivers that are fully
24-bit compatible. Beware!

There are probably other questions I could have/should have asked. Sorry
about that. My main question was whether I needed to upgrade from
version 5.27 in order to use System 7.0 on my SE/30. And the short
answer was "No, also long as you don't password-protect your boot
volume." I also asked if there were any major upgrades schedule for the
near future. The answer was "Nothing scheduled beyond version 5.30, the
fully System 7.0 compatible version."

The above is what I understood of the answers given to my questions.
LaCie is not responsible for my poor phrasing of questions or garbling
of answers.

Hope this helps someone out there.

John
