[comp.sys.mac.system] Applicon Bombs!

tmaddox@milton.u.washington.edu (Tom Maddox) (05/29/91)

Has anyone downloaded Applicon from comp.binaries.mac and gotten
it to work? I've tried it a couple of times, and the copy on our machine
sometimes gives a crc error in debinhexing and then sometimes apparently
does fine only to blow up with "-39" error when I try to run it.

	So--

Is it this particular file, my IIsi, or what?

If the problem is just mine, please e-mail; if you've had the
same experience, e-mail or post as you see fit.

I noticed that one of the lines in the binhex listing of Applicon
seemed to go on forever. I figured that this would make binex barff,
so I didn't even waste time downloading from our mainframe to my mac.
Hopefully a corrected copy will be posted...

I saved the two Applicon messages and merged them here on my VAX
before downloading them. (I can call it my VAX, I'm the sysadmin! :-)
Quick-scrolling through the .hqx file revealed one line that went
beyond the "normal" column length (70?).

I put in an carriage return at the appropriate column, and the excess
lined up with the rest. The subsequent download and debinhexed
application worked fine. (Applicon was just binhexed, no compression)

So, it would seem that there is a single missing carriage return in
the binhex of Applicon that was posted to comp.binaries.mac.,
resulting in one line that is double-length. Find that line, insert
the carriage return, and things should work fine. (It did for me).

On a reviewing note, Applicon looks to be an incredibly useful
utility, especially for people who tend to run a number of
applications simultaneously, and who have a 13" screen or larger.
Also, the ballon help is very well implemented (it's the first example
of ballon help I've seen other than the Finder). It's nice to turn
Balloon Help on during that "exploratory" stage.

(BTW, Applicon is at ftp.apple.com in the dts/mac/hacks directory, but
the file protection is such that you can't ftp it. The new DarkSide
and Xferit are also in the same boat... I've sent mail off to Mark
Johnson, so he knows about it.)

I had the same problem. There are several places in the file where
a line feed is missing. I used a text editor to insert the line feeds and
was able to successfully unbinhex using "toaufs" on a Sun.

Indeed, one linefeed (or whatever the line ending is) was missing but that
didn't bother Binhex and I am now a proud "owner" of this useful tool.

I downloaded Applicaon to my Mac and deleted the comments with an
editor. I noticed the extra long lines, but didn't do anything with
them. It turned out that Stuffit was able to unbinhex and unstuff it
just fine. As another poster already mentioned, this is an incredibly
useful utility. The kind of thing which should come with Sys. 7 in
the first place, since it saves you the hassle of going to the menu
bar each time you want to switch applications or see what else is
running...

We just got it here...from comp.binaries.mac
It worked fine on a Mac II with 8Meg...
The Icons are a little too big and it seems kinda cheesy...
But thats just my opinion...

One problem with Applicon is that some programs create their own
tiles on the screen. Example: Kaleidagraph. When Applicon is
running along with Kaleidagraph, you get TWO tiles ...

Then there is "Tiles" from CE software, which (I remember reading)
uses the tile symbol to launch projects.

Might be time for a WW Tile conference ... -- Bill

Hi, gang --

I wrote Applicon. A lot of people complained that the recent posting
wouldn't unpack properly. (Sorry about that - it worked for me. :-) I've
put together a new package that is both stuffed and binhexed, and this
will appear at ftp.apple.com and at sumex-aim.stanford.edu in the near
future. (It's already at ftp.apple.com but the permissions are wrong. They
know, and it'll be fixed.)

There's been enough hullabaloo that I think I'd better re-post to
comp.binaries.mac as well. Those of you who couldn't get it the first
time, watch for the re-post.

One bug has appeared that my testing missed (nuts!): the preferences are
apparently saved only if you quit by using Applicon's "Quit" menu item;
quitting by Shutdown or Restart of your Mac won't save your preferences.
Sorry!

And by the way: I love getting mail, but PLEASE stop asking for color and
small icons! I promise, I promise, if I get the spare time, I'll do it! :-)

A couple of people have told me this, while a few others simply complained
that their preferences weren't being saved. Now that I've had a chance to
try it myself, I can't reproduce it at all. So if anyone can give me a
better description of the circumstances, I'd be grateful.

Similar here, only error = -192 (I think). No CRC errors though,
using mcvert to de-binhex. I even tried *not* putting it in the startup
folder, quitting from all other applications, restarting, re-buliding the
desktop ...

        And so it goes.

I picked it up from comp.binaries.mac. After all the bomb reports,
I took the precaution of editing in the missing RETURNs (about 5,
I think) before de-binhexing. Works fine on my IIcx. With MacX in
the foreground, the Mac icons look slick and professional (just my
opinion).

I had the same problem when I converted it with mcvert. Downloading
in .hqx format and de-binhexing with Compact-Pro worked. I think
this may be a bug in mcvert.

I had the same reaction. A good idea but not very aesthetic.

I got it from comp.sys.mac.binaries, and mcvert'ed it, and downloaded
it to my Mac, and it took a generic icon, and wouldn't launch.
