Naturally I am delighted with System 7 and with the extensions which have appeared for it so far (such as Understudy, Extension Manager, and Applicon, which is not technically an Extension). I hope that I can encourage some enterprising hacker with the following suggestions: 1. Create a key and mouse combination similar to Option-drag, but which creates an Alias rather than a copy of the original file in the destination. (Also, as with Option-Drag, the new file should have the same name as the original if it is being created in a different directory.) I would suggest Option-Shift-Drag as one of the few combinations that don't already have a unique function and don't require a Control key. 2. If an application supports opening a given filetype via dropping, then have the application show up in the SF Save box when a file of that type is being saved. If the application is selected and "opened", have the application launch, opening the file. (I suppose this would require the creation and eventual deletion of a scratch file. It might also be fairly dangerous, but I can think of a few situations where it could be useful. On the other hand, Apple Events might make it unnecessary.) 3. I remember reading and hearing that the original Lisa was able to shut down and then restart in exactly the same state. It seems to me that this shouldn't be terribly difficult to implement with a hack that automatically creates and deletes aliases in the Startup Items folder right before a Shutdown command is executed. Such a capability would be immensely popular, I suspect. Any takers? --Elliot Wilen elliot@ocf.berkeley.edu !ucbvax!ocf!elliot elliot%ocf@ucbjade
