Try the following (my system: IIcx, main screen 19" Colour, icons, windows in colour, 8-bits): 1. launch at least 2 applications 2. make a window in the frontmost application that partially obscures the Finder's desktop icons 3. move to the other application (using the Application menu on the far right of the menu bar) 4. choose Hide Others 5. move back to the first application (using the menu again) I find if I repeat steps 3, 4 and 5 a few times, the Finder starts getting tired of redrawing the desktop icons after step 4 (which it normally keeps visible when its windows are hidden).
