[comp.sys.mac.system] System 7.0 Idea Source?

gillies@m.cs.uiuc.edu (Don Gillies) (06/01/91)

I was reading an old MacTutor article (Jan 90) and came across a
letter to the editor with "wishes" for the next macintosh finder. I
was surprised because all 8 or 9 wishes in this letter have been
implemented in system 7.0 (such as opening DAs like applications,
opening CDEVs from a folder, etc).

Did this letter have a great impact on the design of system 7.0, or

Hee, hee. I knew this would happen. :-)

In many cases, you should probably credit the foresightedness of the
7.0 engineers. I remember reading many articles like the one you
describe in the trade magazines. Often, it looked like the
pundit/analyst had snagged a copy of an Apple internal design
specification document and turned it into an article for MacUser,
MacTutor, or whatever. Most often, when such an article had appeared,
the 7.0 engineers had implemented the suggested enhancements 6 months
before.

On the other hand, the 7.0 guys didn't exactly design in a vacuum. If
you look back at the 1988 magazines, you might see suggestions similar
to the ones you read in 1990.
