[comp.sys.mac.system] Printing from Finder problems!

DN5@psuvm.psu.edu (D. Jay Newman) (06/02/91)

Hi:

We have been having some minor but strange problems with System 7.0.

The problems are caused by selecting multiple Word files from the finder,
and then using "Print" to print them. The files are selected from an
AppleShare volume, if that is relevant.

We are printing to a LaserWriter NTX, and using background printing.

1. Word launches in print mode, and prints the files (to the built-in
   print-spooler). This works successfully.

2. Word finishes, then eventually PrintMonitor starts. After a little bit
of thinking, it comes up with a dialog box explaining that there is
not enough memory for PrintMonitor, and gives us the option of increasing
the memory. We give it permission to do so (looking at it, it adds 10
   kbtyes to the size).

3. PrintMonitor restarts, and gives us the bomb box, usually some sort of
CHK error. The bomb box gives us a restart button.

4. The system restarts. PrintMonitor notices that there are things hanging
around to be printed, but remembers that there was an error. It gives
us the option of cancelling or printing. We choose printing.

5. Now everything (all three files) print correctly!

All of this is on a Mac II with 5 meg RAM, connected to a scanner, and on
our AppleShare network. There are no funny INITs or CDEVs running (I got
rid of them for testing). This is repeatable every time. I have reinstalled
the printing stuff, and it still has problems. I did increase the amount
of memory available to finder by 30k (booting with 6.0.5, and adding
some memory to the multi-finder partition).

If anybody has any possible suggestions, I'd like to hear them.

Thanks in advance, and I will summarize for the net if I find the answer to
this problem. What I can't understand is why it prints correctly AFTER the
restart!?!?
