[comp.sys.mac.system] Sys 7 Start-up Hairball

chuck@brain.UUCP (Chuck Shotton) (06/06/91)

I've noticed an "interesting" problem that happens in the following situation:
o Running System 7 (release) on a Mac IIci
-- internal Apple 80 meg drive, 2 partitions, System 6 on "first" partiton.
-- external LaCie 105 with 3 partitions, System 7 on the "first"
       partition.
-- Both drives have been formatted and initialized with SilverLining 5.28/12

If the start-up device is set to be the external 105, and I LOCK all of
the non-System 7 partitions using something like SilverVolumes (both internal
and external drives), the boot process to bring up System 7 takes about 5
MINUTES!

Sys 7 (Finder?) seems to have severe heartburn if there are multiple partitions
on the same device as the boot partition these partitions are locked. Sys
7 could care less about the locked partitions on the internal drive, but it
seems to expect that if the "first" partition is unlocked on the boot device,
ALL partitions on that device should (must) be unlocked. (This seems vaguely
reminiscent of A/UX's stupid behavior with multiple HFS partitions on a single
disk...)

Can anyone explain what is going on here?
