[comp.sys.mac.system] Help needed: Can't open my System Suitcase

zark@csd4.csd.uwm.edu (Steven M Kosloske) (06/06/91)

I'm having trouble with my system suitcase in System 7. Since the day
I installed it, every time I try to drop something into it, or try to
double-click on it to open it, I get a message saying the System is
damaged? At first I thught it was a problem with System 7 not letting you
open the System directly, but I've been told that I should be able to open
it. Can someone suggest a fix? I'd appreciate any help.

To answer my own question, and to help others with the same problem:

Thanks to all who sent suggestions on how to fix my problem.

First, I used Resedit to remove ALL of the fonts that were not included
with System 7. (There are 15 font families included) You have to remove
the fonts from the FOND resource of the System file. Once all of the
extra fonts are gone, save the file and exit Resedit. You hsould now be
able to open the System suitcase. You then take all the fonts you removed
from the System resource, and remove them from the window. You can just
put them in another folder. After this, your System should open and
close fine. You can add any of the fonts back into the System that you
still need. I'm not sure why System 7 bombs when it adds the fonts
itself. A bug maybe?

Another small problem I am having now, though: Every time it draws out
a dialog box in Finder, such as opening the About this Macintosh... from
the Apple menu, it draws out the fonts VERY slowly. It was quicker
before, I'm sure of it. Perhaps just a problem with my system, I'm
learning more of System 7 as I play with it more.
