[comp.sys.mac.system] I think we gotta Desktop Bug...!

Ok, apologies for the inflammatory subject line. But, going off recent postings
here, and my own experience, I have a feeling there's something fishy with
Sys7.0's Desktop management. My problem is that applications and documents
occasionally lose their icons, and the documents lose their links with the
applications so they cannot be launched.

Two possible causes: (1) I'm running Silverlining with several partitions, so
I have aliases and documents on different volumes which mount in some
arbitrary order. (2) I restored the disk from a backup with an old backup
program which doesn't know about aliases (although it should just restore
the alias and Icon files anyway, right?).

The problem seems confined to applications and documents I've aliased (into
the Apple menu, for example); others seem fine. But, the original apps/docs
(not the aliases) keep losing their icons fairly sporadically when I reboot.
A temporary fix seems to be to select the file, Get Info, select the icon,
and then COPY, PASTE and CLEAR.

Right now I have a floppy containing a single application. Under 6.0.7 the
icon appears. Under 7.0 it has a generic icon. And I'm lost for ideas.

Yes, I've rebuilt the desktop zillions of times for all the volumes in every
conceivable order...

	Nick.

Your problem is that you are not using System 7.0 drivers on your hard
drives, which can cause some nasty things to happen. Update all your
drivers and your problems should go away.
