[comp.sys.mac.system] StartUpVol icon badly located

roessli@sc2a.unige.ch (06/14/91)

   [ I'm posting this message for a friend (Ron - boeck@cmu.unige.ch) who's
     currently newless..]

A weird thing happend last night with his IIsi 5/40 (6.0.7) 13": the hard disk
icon (startup volume) doesn't show up anymore in the upper right corner, but
somewhere towards the 2nd third of the screen .. as do any disk you insert
afterwards. Move the icon to the right edge, select 'clean up desktop', and it
pops back to its original location (along with the Trash). We first thought of
a layout problem, and checked Norton's Layout prog, but there's no mention of
(hard) icon location.

This problem doesn't occur when booting of a disk though .. we then tried
replacing the system files with fresh copies - no change .. the icon still
appears 2 thirds to the right .. Zapping the PRAM, rebuilding the desktop didn't
solve anything either.

Where are these info located ? Can they be edited ? (with ResEdit, Norton's
disk ed ?). What's the final word about this ?

Another curious thing is that it actually seems to appear somewhere near the
512th pixel .. the Trash moves up too .. as if the OS was cleaning up a SE or
Classic screen .. Could it be that the boot blocks have somehow been changed,
modifing the machine ID ?

All hints, solutions, remarks, sympathy welcome.
