[comp.sys.mac.system] Copying to floppy doesn't correctly check space

long@mcntsh.enet.dec.com (Rich Long) (06/23/91)

A new possible bug in 7.0! What fun.

I was copying a folder containing 96 items, in 1,415,436 bytes, to a freshly
formatted HD floppy. The Finder trundled along, never warning about
insufficent space, until it got close to the end, when it said "the command
could not be completed because of insufficient space" or something like that.
I imagine this was because of desktop file update. This is probably something
that should be taken into account when evaluating space on the destination.

Funny how all my System 7 problems have been floppy-related (like the
infinite loop of "Please insert..." followed by me pressing Command/Dot and
then "This disk could not be used because it is not in any drive"). Sigh.

I'm afraid I have noticed this sort of error in System 6.0.X.
It only happens as you say when the thing would have fitted if the
Desktop wasn't made bigger. I'm not sure if this only happened when I
was using the DeskTop Manager INIT or all the time (I suspect the
first).

If you think that is fun, wait 'til you hear this one:

I have a floppy that I created exclusively with MPW 3.1, and had never
come in contact with the Finder (thus no desktop file). It was packed
to the gills (literally only 512 bytes left). Under 6.0.x, if I had
inserted it, the Finder would bitch "Unable to create desktop" or
something like that and unmount the disk. Under 7.0, the machine
hangs (can't even break to MacsBug) unless the disk is locked. Great,
eh? Had to load 6.0.5 off of floppies, start MPW, and move enough
files off to let the Finder make its desktop...
