[comp.sys.mac.system] Sys 6 <-> Sys 7 ... Sys 6 no longer bootable. Help!

hardin@dino.cad.mcc.com (John Hardin) (06/20/91)

In upgrading my vanilla Mac II (no PMMU, 5M) to System 7, I created 3
SilverLining partitions on my hard drive: a minimal System 6 partition
(from which I restored my backed-up System 6 partition), a restored
System 6 partition, and a System 7 partition.

Things have been running quite smoothly (i.e., I can boot my system
from *any* of the partitions). However, just recently, I can no
longer boot my system from the restored System 6 partition. When
attempting to boot from this partition, the "happy" mac face appears,
the screen blinks (kind of flickers with a checker-board looking
pattern), then (I guess) decides it can't boot from that partition
(i.e., the restored System 6), and moves on to the next partition. I
can still boot from the remaining two partitions. And after booting,
the restored System 6 partition is completely accessible (i.e., it
mounts just fine - so I think the partition itself is okay). I've
restored my Finder and System file from backup, but I still can't boot
from that partition.

Has anyone seen these sorts of problems and know what can be done
(short of *completely* restoring my partition from backup) to fix it?

Thanks in advance,
-jwh

I had a similar problem -- when I first installed System 7 it was ok, but
then I tried to switch back to 6.0.5 (by renaming the 6.0.5 partition in
Silverlining so that it would mount first). THAT worked, but I couldn't
undo it. Renaming the partitions again and rebooting caused the
checkerboard pattern you mention to appear, followed by a System 6 boot.
I deleted System 7 and reinstalled it on its partition, and now I'm
happily running 7 again. I haven't tried switching back to 6.0.5 by
renaming partitions. I tried using SystemSwitcher, but the machine
always boots with System 7.
I've got a IIcx, 8 Meg, no internal drive, LaCie external with Silverlining
5.31. The System 6 system has the Desktop Manager installed.

Thanks in advance from me too,
           Steve (langer@control.uchicago.edu)

I've solved my problem! But I don't find the solution very
comforting! I ultimately had to restore the entirety of the System
folder from backup. But even after restoring, I still had the same
"unable to boot, checkerboard flicker" problem. By (divine? :-)
"happenstance", I happened onto the "Set Startup..." dialog and
noticed that the (restored - *twice* now!) System 6 partition (that
wouldn't boot) startup was set to Finder - not MultiFinder. This is
(was) weird, because the startup was set to MultiFinder when it was
backed up. Well, to make an already way too long story only a little
bit longer, I set the startup to MultiFinder and restarted and, low
and behold, THE PARTITION NOW BOOTS!

(Obviously there's something going on here that I don't understand. Can
some enlightened soul possibly clear my confusion?)

Anyway, all seems well. I can now consistently boot Systems 6 and 7.
(Steve, I hope this info helps you.)
