[comp.sys.mac.system] Help! Munged System File

heuring@kirk.Colorado.EDU (Vincent Heuring) (06/25/91)

How about some help from you Mac weenies with a weird problem
we're having with the IIsi, running 6.0.x.

Several days ago, with no warning, and with nobody having done nothing
out of the ordinary, about half of the DA's and Fonts got their
names changed to garbage strings. Some of the strings contained
nonprinting characters, and some of them were several dozen characters long.
The DA's and fonts are *apparently* still working, just their names
got munged.

Nobody had used font/da mover or any other tool that writes to the
system file.

What could have caused this?

When does the system file get written to?

Could we have bad ram here?

What's the best way to fix it?

Thanks in advance...

Yes, I had this happen on my IIsi (6.0.7 is the only 6.0.x compatible
with it, by the way) and my Q & D solution was to reinstall the system
and my desk accessories. 6.0.7 was such a great incentive to upgrade
to 7.0; thanks for the bugs, Apple-- they were worth it to have 7.0.
