Now you have me somewhat concerned. This file has also appeared
in my Systems Folder - it has a GateKeeper icon and the same Type
and reator code as the GateKeeper log files, TEXT, Gate. The
is no resource fork and a data fork of 4588 bytes. It does not
seem to be modified, but I cannot relate the creation date to
anything that I did with the system on that date.

At least, I"m glad (??) that I am not the only one with this.
Also no indication of any virus after running a variety of
anti-viral programs.

I keep some big files in one of my folders and sometimes TempOpti148
shows up there. The file shows up periodically. The files in the
folder are locked, and maybe MicroSoft Word makes the file. Also,
whenever I am tuning up the disk with SUM, the files cannot be
defragmented for some reason (because they are locked?) The files
are usually just like one of the locked files, and have an Icon
indicating they are Word documents.

Hope this helps. . .

I thought I'd answered this one recently, but I guess I didn't.

TempOptilnnnn files are created by SIM TuneUp. It's not a virus, it's not a
bug (maybe a misfeature), it's not a problem.

If you have a locked file that is fragmented, when TuneUp tries to make it
contiguous it does so by creating a temporary file and copying the current
file to it. It then deletes the old file and renames it -- this way, if
something happens during the process the old file isn't destroyed.
Unfortunately, if the file is locked, the attempt to delete it fails and the
other copy of the file is left around.

Easy answer: unlock any file that TuneUp says it can't defragment in the log
(you do read the logs, don't you?) and run TuneUp again. Then lock it again.

One strange note on this: TuneUp can't defragment files that are locked, but
it will happily relocate locked files to optimize disk space if they're
contiguous. The former is evidently done through the HFS filesystem calls
which pay attention to the locked bit, and the latter goes around the OS to
physically move stuff around.

I regret to announce that--though, as I said, eleventy-one years is far too
short a time to spend among you--this is the end. I am going. Good-bye.

I was sure someone would answer this by now, but I guess not...

The TempOptilnn files are temporary optimization files (sort of
figures) created by the HD Optimizing program (I guess from SUM).
What they are is another copy of the actual file, which is being
copied to a contiguous portion of the hard drive (thereby 'optimizing'
by most current definitions). If it stays there, it PROBABLY means
that the optimizing program had a hard time with it...
