A student here formatted a High Density disk to use in an old SE... She had her resume on it, and my boss wanted me to print it out for her. I (not knowing the situation) popped it into my IIcx, and the machine wanted to initialize it... I thought it might be a DOS disk, and AFE couldn't recognize it either. (Neither could 2 dos machines...) ?? Told my boss. sorry, no can do... He came up later, with the student, and she explained that she was using an se... So I thought...Hmmmmmm... Maybe our MacPlus could recognize it... Sure enough, it did... HOW EMBARRASING! (probably spelled it wrong) Will this be fixed in a future Sysyetm Software release? APPLE?? It seems the drive in the IIcx should have been able to recognize it. That drive should be able to recognize ANY mac disk... How about it Apple Folks! ?

You shouldn't use HD floppies in an 800K or 400K drive, it's not recommended and they're too expensive. But, you're going to run into the occasional person with a +/SE who bought the best diskettes they could find which happen to have that extra hole, so you can't read it from your FDHD (stands for FRED) drive. Use the old trick of the floppy masters: cover the extra hole with a piece of tape. (Make very certain that this tape *cannot* come off when you put it in your drive. This is your responsibility. Failure to do so will mess up your drive and make you mad at me, since I won't pay to get it fixed.) -Owen Owen Hartnett omh@cs.brown.edu.CSNET Brown University Computer Science omh@cs.brown.edu uunet!brunix!omh "Don't wait up for me tonight because I won't be home for a month."
