[comp.sys.mac.misc] Frozen Mac when a folder is double-clicked or a file is copied

toyama@sierra.Stanford.EDU (Keiichiro Toyama) (06/10/90)

I have a strange problem.

I recently acquired a SE/30 and a Quantum 170MB internal diskdrive.
The Quantum drive was formatted by Alliance Power Tool from Alliance
Peripheral Systems. Files were copied to the Quantum drive from my old
Jasmine DirectDrive 70 and SuperMac XP40. The Mac has 5MB memory and
6.05 system.

When I was playing around with my new Mac SE/30 and double-clicked a
certain folder, the Mac just froze. I tried the interrupt switch in
vain and needed to reset it. Before this, I was able to open that
folder with no problem. But ever since this happened, every time I
double-click that particular folder, the symptom repeats. I also tried
a open-command from the menu and command-O key combination from the
keyboard with the same result.

I was able to copy that folder to the Jasmine drive or floppy diskket,
and even opened the copied folder and lunched the files inside. I then
copied back the folder on the Jasmine drive to the Quantum internal
drive with success. However, when I double-clicked this new folder on
the Quantum drive, the Mac froze again.

Next time I tried to copy the folder on the Jasmine drive to the
Quantum drive, the Mac froze in the middle of the copying process. I
also tried to copy a file inside that folder on the Jasmine drive to
the Quantum drive and obtained the same frozen Mac.

I replaced system files with fresh ones from the system tool diskkets.
The problem persists.

I checked the Quantum drive with SAM Virus Clinic 2.0 for virus
infection. No infection found.

I use a utility program to read all the blocks of the Quantum drive
with success.

I finally erased that folder from the Quantum drive and went to bed.
The next morning when I was using the Mac, all of the sudden the same
problem happened again to a different folder. Then another folder was
affected. It seems the symptom is spreading.

I have little idea what is happening although it seems the symptom is
particular to the SE/30 & Quantum drive combination because I have no
problem when the files were moved to other disk drives.

Any idea? Any suggestions?

I desperately need help.

One thing that you don't say is wether or not the drive access light stayed
on when the machine froze.

I had a similar problem on a brand new SE 2/40 with quantum internal drive.
As it turned out, the drive was found to have some BAD sections on it and
froze whenever access was attempted to those intermittently BAD bits.

The supplier replaced the drive.

Hope this doesn't alarm you too much but your problem reads exactly like
mine was.

Mark.
