[comp.sys.mac.misc] color maps--how do they work?

What is a color map on a color Mac? I have a Mac IIcx with
a color monitor. Sometimes I change the colors using the
dialog box with the color wheel and the arrow boxes for
hue and etc. (I have an 8 bit color monitor card.)

Most of the time, after I exit the dialog box, the color
I have changed *reverts to its previous state*!!! This is very
frustrating. For example, when I fiddle with the desktop
pattern, I can only use the colors supplied. When I try to make a
gray bluer, for example, it goes back to the way it was.

In some programs, for example, a physics program called Flux Tube,
the colors stay changed. When they do, the desktop pattern changes
too. In the cdev, it stays the way it was previously; outside
the cdev, it goes to the changed colors....

This must have something to do with "color map"...Is the color map
on the video card or elsewhere? Are there pointers to
software that I could use to adjust this difficulty?
